Family Camping Ideas Near Cape May: Fun That Goes Beyond the Beach

family camping ideas

When you picture a Jersey Shore vacation, the beach probably comes to mind first, and for good reason. But ask any family that has camped with us since 1979 and they will tell you that the moments they treasure most often happen off the sand: a first pony kiss, a marshmallow toasted just right, a firefly hunt at dusk. At Ponderosa Campground in Cape May Court House, the Kelleher family has spent more than four decades gathering family camping ideas that turn an ordinary weekend into the trip your kids ask to repeat, year after year.

Start right at your campsite

The best family camping ideas often begin before you drive anywhere. Walk over to Little Hooves Farm, our on-site animal farm where nearly every resident is a rescue. Families can stroll through and say hello to Prince the pony, Darla the Jersey cow, and the goats, bunnies, and chickens. From there, cool off in our saltwater pool, turn the kids loose on the playground and sandbox, or start a pickup game on the volleyball or basketball court. Tucked into roughly 20 wooded acres, the campground is quiet enough to feel like an escape and busy enough that no one gets bored. Plenty of families never leave the property, and they go home happy.

Explore just beyond the gate

When you are ready to venture out, the area rewards curiosity. One of our favorite history-loving family camping ideas is a visit to Historic Cold Spring Village, a living-history museum just minutes away where costumed interpreters demonstrate blacksmithing, weaving, and old-fashioned trades across 27 restored buildings, with farm animals roaming the grounds. It is the kind of place where children learn without realizing they are learning. The free Cape May County Park and Zoo is only about three miles south, and the beaches of Avalon and Stone Harbor sit just three miles the other direction, so a single trip can mix sand, history, and animals without a long drive between any of them. And save one evening for Cape May's Sunset Beach, where families gather each night for a moving flag-lowering ceremony as the sun sinks into the bay. It is equal parts history lesson and one of the finest sunsets on the East Coast, and the kids will remember it long after the trip ends.

Grown-ups deserve fun too. South Jersey has become a genuine craft beer and wine destination, with several breweries and wineries a short drive away. You can browse the local attractions we recommend most, from seafood shacks to boardwalk arcades, and build a day that gives every member of the family something to look forward to.

The simplest ideas stick the longest

Some of our most-requested family camping ideas cost nothing at all. Plan a camp-wide scavenger hunt. Hold a family cook-off at your fire ring, and yes, we sell the firewood, ice, and even the ice cream in the office. Bring a deck of cards and a star chart for after dark, because the sky out here puts on a show you will not see back home. Hand the kids a few glow sticks and let them lead a night walk to the farm to say goodnight to the animals. The evenings, more than anything, are what families remember.

If your crew likes to stay active, the flat South Jersey terrain is made for it. Bring bikes for an easy family ride, cast a line at one of the nearby fishing spots, or spend a morning collecting shells and sea glass on the beach before the afternoon crowds arrive. Back at camp, our covered pavilion is a favorite gathering spot for group dinners and rainy-afternoon board games, and the courts are open for a pickup game of volleyball or basketball. The beauty of a campground is that the day bends to your family's pace, not the other way around, which is why our best family camping ideas always leave room to do nothing at all.

What makes Ponderosa different is not any single attraction. It is the feeling of a place still run by the same family that started it, where the pace is slower, the neighbors wave, and every pet fee you pay is donated to a local animal shelter at the end of the season. When you are deciding where to make your memories this year, we would love to help you make them here, three miles from the beach and a world away from the rush.

Ready to start planning? Reach out, tell us who is coming, and we will help you match your crew to the right cabin or site. Your next great family story is waiting.
