History
Robert and Judy Kelleher, along with their five children, purchased Ponderosa Campground in 1979. Robert who was called “BOB” or “Big Boy” purchased the campground for his wife Judy to raise their five children, he was a commercial fisherman and clammed for surf clams off the shore of Cape May. Bob was not on land much and was at sea working while Judy and her children, three girls, Marcia, Michelle, and Melissa and her two boys Bob, and John worked at the campground. The boys where also commercial fisherman and when not at sea with their dad they would help around the campground. At that time the house was a small farmhouse and there was a small camp store at that time we only offered seasonal sites and there was no EX section until many years later. The seasonal sites consisted of only travel trailers and not the luxury Park Models you see today. At the end of every year the trailers where pulled off sites and put in storage and the Kelleher family would paint the picnic tables every year and pick up the trash in a pick-up truck and take it to the dump.

Camping has evolved at Ponderosa Campground, their daughter Marcia Kelleher took over the business in 1990 so her mother and father could retire and head out for sports fishing in Florida and Chincoteague, Va. Tragically, Bob passed away from cancer a short time after, and that has been a great loss to the Kelleher family and to Ponderosa Campground. Marcia and her two children Sydney and Brody currently live on the property and manage the campground. Judy Kelleher helps Marcia with her children and ideas on the campground. Ponderosa has come a far way since 1979 with the addition of the beautiful pool, activity pavilion, arcade, and cottage style log cabins. The one thing that will never change is that Ponderosa is family owned and operated and will always strive to offer all families an affordable vacation at the Jersey Shore.
