Robert and Judy Kelleher along with their five children purchased Ponderosa Campground in 1979. Robert who was called “BOB” or Big Boy purchased the campground for his wife Judy to raise their five children, he was a commercial fisherman and clammed for surf calms off the shore of Cape May. Bob was not on land much and was at sea working. Judy and her children, three girls, Marcia, Michelle, and Melissa and her two boys Bob, and John worked at the campground. The boys also where commercial fisherman and when not at sea with their dad they would help around the campground. At that time the house was a small farmhouse and there was a camp store. We only offered seasonal sites and there was not the EX section. The seasonal sites consisted of travel trailer not luxury Park Models. At the end of every year the trailers where pulled off sites and put in storage. family would paint the picnic tables every year and pick up the trash in a pick up truck and take it to the dump.
Camping has evolved at Ponderosa Campground, their daughter Marcia Kelleher took over the business in 1990 so her mother and father could retire and head out sports fishing in Florida and Chincotequea Va. Tragically, Bob passed away from cancer a short time after, and has been a great loss to the Kelleher family and to Ponderosa Campground. Marcia and her two children Sydney and Brody currently live and manage the campground. Judy Kelleher helps Marcia with her children and ideas on the campground. Ponderosa has come a far way since 1979 with addition of a beautiful pool, cabins, and a spacious tent sections. The one thing that will never change is Ponderosa is family owned and operated and will always strive to offer all families a affordable vacation at the Jersey Shore.
